Like many a 70's kids i stayed up late with my Dad on occasion sharing raisin bran or peanut butter banana sandwiches while watching Carson followed by David Letterman. The Guests would wear the latest stylish clothing and the bands would seg way the evening along. My favorite was when Carson would hold a card to his forehead and dish us the future while Ed chuckled at the logic and responses.
Letterman however captured my attention in a very different way. Pedestrian crosswalk races for starters had me eager to see the winner. Telephoning the lady across the street in an office sharing the same number of floors up in the skyline. Watching as Letterman fought for Carsons spot, lost it to Leno and furthered his show despite not thinking he achieved, was a comic in the raw. A comic who now was a successful comedian but still a miserable comedian. Makes since to those who know the temperament of a comic.
As a gen x er I am prone to Letterman. Leno was there but Letterman lead. Today project late night continues to mill through its rosters and search for the winning host to transport the advertising numbers to epic broadcasting standards. We will watch Letterman again be the lead. The transition of Leno to Fallon and Fallon to Myers as NBC shifts its roster, will ripple the waves of viewers sharing space on the open water with Arsenio being back, Kimmel who continues. Meanwhile, the Comedy Central slant on the headlines from the day, we are craving like a bowl of raisin bran or a peanut butter and banana sandwich.
